What’s up with the weird web address?

I’m economical. And I’ve come to realise that I don’t really need a .com domain.

1. The problem with .com

Verisign (authoritative registry for .com) keeps increasing the costs of renewal for .com domains without adding any value. When I bought my domain, the renewal was ~$8 a year. Now, at the time of writing, it is $16 a year. They have a monopoly, and have used their position to engage in monopolistic behaviour. I’m not exactly a fan of this.

2. The opportunity of 1.111B class .xyz domains

.XYZ launched the 1.111B class .xyz domains which are cheap domains priced at US$0.99 per year and renewed at the same price. They are 6-digit, 7-digit, 8-digit, and 9-digit numeric combinations between 000000.xyz – 999999999.xyz

10 Years for $10? Sign me right up.

3. The journey towards BAOZI

The creative challenge of coming up with a domain name with these input type constraints reminded me of being a kid again whereby I would use a calculator to spell out words e.g. 3995 → EGGS. This process led me to rendering the word “BAOZI”, and I chose this word because:

  1. I like Chinese food.
  2. It’s a bit cryptic and hard to remember (which is fine for my use case, since I will mainly use the domain to create sub domains e.g. iscorekeeper.134021.xyz)
